My three year old daughter requested a kitten for her birthday and I felt good about going the shelter to rescue a kitten. No more than five minutes after we got home, my daughter lead me to her room and declared "toilet train cat," as she pointed to a "present" left by kitty on the carpet. While I had already purchased and set up a litter box I realized that I had no idea how to litter train a kitten, so I called the vet for some much needed instructions. What I found out was cat toilet training measures that new cat owners can take that solves the problem quickly. Can you use some methods that work on getting kitty to use the litter box? Then please take a moment of your time to read how I solved the problem without any more "accidents."
Litter box and location
It was recommended that the litter box be deep, and that for the litter I should buy the fine grade. Most cats and kittens will prefer the fine grade litter over the coarse clay litter. When buying the fine grade litter you'll not want to buy the scented variety because cats and kittens do not like the artificial scents. When deciding where to locate the kitty litter box, take into consideration that the cat will prefer a secluded location, and that it is not near their food and water source. The cat will prefer the seclusion of the litter box, and you will eliminate the chance that the food and water will become contaminated with the kick back from the litter. You can reduce that the cat kicks out of the litter box by purchasing a tray for underneath the box that extends out 6 inches around the box.Another idea is to place a scratch mat at the front of the litter box for the cat to clean their paws after each use.
Praise good behavior
The good news is that most cats and kittens will want to use a litter box. Once you have the litter box placed in a secluded area, introduce the kitten to the litter box. With any luck the cat will take to the litter box immediately and the cat will be trained. On the other hand you're most likely going to have to train the kitten a little bit more. The kitten will have to be shown the kitty litter box regularly, but especially after meals and anytime they show the signs of a need to go.The best method of training comes from praise that is given when the kitten successfully uses the kitty litter box.
Cleaning up "presents"
You can bet that the kitten needs to go when they begin to scratch at the floor in remote locations. Immediately take the cat to the kitty litter box and wait till their done. Cats will sometimes stray from the litter box if it becomes full, so you will need to keep it clean with fresh litter if you expect the cat to continue to use it. All areas that have to be cleaned up after an accident will have to be cleaned well and a deodorizer will have to be used.
